Demonstration and Promotion Project for the High-Quality Recycling of Marine Wastes

Absrtact
The implementation period of this project is from March 5, 2020 to March 31, 2021. Relevant results include: (1) We have collected and integrated marine debris information to understand the current situation. We also invited experts, environmental protection groups and local authorities to address the generation of marine debris, the current beach cleanup and material recycling problems in 2 sessions of meetings. This project also evaluates the material characteristics of each marine debris item and the current status of domestic recycling technology. Finally, the targets for marine debris recycling are PET bottles and fishing nets. (2) This project links the recycling supply chain of marine debris resources, establishes a material production model, and ensures the recyclability of materials. Based on the material characteristics of PET bottles and fishing nets, complete the collection of domestic and foreign recycling cases, and evaluate feasible demonstration cases of recycling of marine debris in Taiwan. To establish a possible complete supply chain for recycling of marine debris materials. (3) We have established a marine debris recycling verification mechanism and executed verification operations. We have conducted 2 sessions of beach cleanup and stream cleanup activities verification operations. We also encourage manufacturers to use marine debris to make product (using 100% recycled plastic bottles). In January 2021, 1,500 products (the shirts are called Shiun Bao Yi) were made, a name that carries the meaning of recycling and reuse and emphasizes that the materials come from the ocean or seaside. Except for the necessary elastic fabrics, 96% of the materials used are made from waste plastic bottles collected from the ocean and beaches. (4) We have promoted the high-quality recycling system of marine debris, established a demonstration case of circular economy, completed the design of the marine debris recycling product label, and proposed a draft proposal for the promotion of the marine debris recycling product label. In addition, we completed the on-site filming of beach cleaning operations and textile manufacturing, an interview with the minister of EPA, and the editing of Chinese and English dubbing videos.
